Deadly viewing, to keep the boredom at bay...
As we settle into the new COVID-19 lockdown life, some of us are finding a lot of time on our hands... Surprisingly, now with all this extra time at home, the never-ending list of binge-worthy TV shows is getting shorter and shorter.
If you’re looking for some quality TV time to finish off your working from home day, to keep the rainy-day blues at bay or to keep the kids quiet... we’ve got you covered!
No Netflix login? No worries! After all, we don’t all have a cousin we can score Netflix access from!
Luckily, SBS OnDemand and ABC iview have some deadly funny shows to keep you and your Mob laughing through COVID-19- and it wont cost you a cent! Here are our favourites that will keep you loving your indoor life...
1. Robbie Hood
This show is short and sweet! Actually, scratch that, short and sour is probably better suited to this show’s star performer, Robbie. Based in Alice Springs, Robbie is a mischievous rebel with a cause; always doing the right thing, even when it’s a little bit wrong... This show is sure to make you giggle!
2. Black Comedy
Whether you’re starting at season 1 or ready to dive into the final season 4, the deadly funny, weird and occasionally whacky scenes from this talented team is sure to have you choking on your tea (from laughing not COVID-19, hopefully!). Binge-watch four seasons now!
3. Kiki and kitty
Make sure you keep the kids away from the screen for this one! Nakia Lui’s role as Kiki, an adventurous young, black woman navigating a big, white world, is sure to have you in stitches... and the kids wondering what you’re watching in there! Still, it’s worth it but hey, find out for yourself!
Need something for the whole family?
As we are all staying inside to keep our community and most importantly, our Elders safe, it means that some of us might have to share the remote with the whole family. If that’s you, don’t stress here’s a few free shows that will keep everyone from running up the walls!
1. The Kununarra Kid
This free to stream coming-of-age documentary series follows the heart-warming adventures of Tom Forest, a young Aboriginal man leaving his hometown of Kununarra in the East Kimberley of Western Australia on a search for adventure, meaning and self. Travel alongside Tom from the comfort of your couch, bed or desk (I mean, let’s face it, they are all blurring into one at this point, right?).
2. First Nations Bedtime stories
They may be quick, but these beautiful stories are bound to stay with you for a lot longer! Some of them you may already know but I doubt you’ve ever heard them told so beautifully. This project was done with the NITV mob and respected Pitjantjatjara Elders. Some of these stories are told using the Pitjantjatjara technique of ‘story-wire drawing’, which uses wire to illustrate stories in the sand. Relax, breathe and let your mind flow with the histories and strength of these stories...
3. Wrong Kind of Black
This award winning show takes us back to 1960s and 1970s through the eyes and life journey of Birri-gubba and Kunggandji man, Boori Monty Pryor. Set in a time of racial tensions and rife inequality, this memory-inspired series is a powerful escape that will fill you with Community love and pride.
4. First Australians
If you never got around to ticking this incredible series off your ‘must watch’ list, then COVID lockdown has given you the gift of a no shame TV binge. Get your cuppa ready and settle your Mob into their comfy chair, ready to watch this powerful journey through our ancestors’ wisdom and resilience.
