The Digital Mentoring Project will connect Glebe and Forest Lodge residing, over 55s with UTS students for digital mentoring. If you have a device, smart phone, laptop, or pad, and would like to learn how to use it better, UTS students are here to help. The Digital Mentoring Program will employ students facing hardship due to COVID19 to assist older community members feel more confident using their digital devices. Many of the students participating in the program are international students or on humanitarian visas, these students have limited or no income. Contrary to media reports these students are not wealthy nor able to return to their families.
Students are keen to connect with and help others in the community. Mentoring sessions will be for 1 hour or up to 2 hours if longer is needed. You can both arrange a place and a time to meet each week. Together you and your student mentor will achieve your technologicalgoals.
Student Mentor responsibilities:
The mentor will help you to set digital goals – things you would like to do with your device. The mentor will work with you and provide information for you to achieve these goals.
The mentor will commit to your sessions and come prepared each week.
The mentor will give you homework to practice between the mentoring sessions. This is to develop your confidence and practice the skills you have been taught.
Your responsibilities:
Appointments: Please let your mentor know in advance if you cannot attend a session.
COVID safety guidelines: If you are feeling unwell, please let us know so we can reschedule your session. Please bring along your hand sanitiser, although your mentor will also have sanitizer and alcohol wipes to use on your device during the mentoring session.
Meeting place: Let us know if you have any access needs so we can consider the best place to meet or for digital learning needs.
Mentors and mentees are required to treat each other with respect, patience, and kindness. We ask that you both respect each other’s difference.
Bring your device to the session and have it charged.
Privacy and confidentiality:
The mentors will respect your level of skills and access needs with confidence and as UTS staff they will abide by the UTS confidentiality and privacy agreement in the mentoring program.
You should not give your mentors any personal information. When personal information is required, your mentor will explain to you how to enter the information into your device / website.
Do not give your mentor any money, including money for reimbursements or credit card or banking details. This protects you and our students.
Finally, we are taking COVID-19 safety precautions by:
Limiting sessions to be 1-2 hours long.
The student mentor will bring along some hand wipes and hand sanitizer
Meeting in open spaces
Once you submit the form below, we will endeavour to match you with a student mentor within 2-3 weeks.
